Actress who accused producer of rape charged with drug possession

Rose McGowan has charmed television and movie fans in Washington for years, but law enforcement had little sympathy for her alleged drug possession. The actress turned herself into authorities on the East Coast because of an arrest warrant issued by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Police Department.

Investigators accuse her of leaving personal belongings on an United Airlines airplane. According to police, tests showed trace amounts of narcotics on the discarded material. McGowan faces a felony charge for possession of a controlled substance. She has been released on a $5,000 unsecured bond.

On Twitter, McGowan expressed her view that the criminal charges represent an attempt to silence her. She has been an outspoken accuser of film producer Harvey Weinstein. She claims that he raped her in 1997 at the Sundance Film Festival. Media outlets have reported that she accepted a settlement from the producer regarding the alleged attack.

Any person confronted by drug charges will have to contend with the consequences within the criminal justice system. Right after an arrest, an attorney could provide advice that helps a person understand legal rights before answering any questions. An attorney might mount a defense by questioning the actions of law enforcement if evidence points to an unlawful search and seizure or mistakes during testing of alleged controlled substances. Another strategy that might deflect harsh penalties could be for an attorney to suggest that a prosecutor impose participation in a drug treatment program instead of jail time. Efforts to negotiate with a prosecutor could result in a plea deal with reduced charges and a lenient sentence.
