300 arrested by feds in health care fraud cases

Washington residents may be interested in learning about a health care fraud sting that was performed by federal agents. According to sources, 300 people were charged across the nation in what has been characterized as the country's biggest health care fraud bust ever.

.According to authorities with the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Justice, the people who were charged are accused of defrauding Medicaid and Medicare out of $900 million for either performing unnecessary treatments or billing for services that were never performed.

The people who were charged come from all over the country. Among those arrested are 30 doctors and 60 medical professionals. In one alleged scheme in New York, five people were charged with defrauding the governmental systems out of $86 million, then funneling the proceeds through a series of shell companies. Among those five are a licensed physical therapist and a licensed occupational therapist.

People who are charged with fraud may face substantial penalties, including fines and long terms of imprisonment, if a conviction is obtained. Those who believe that they are under investigation for a white collar crime may want to retain the services of an experienced criminal defense attorney before they are indicted. An attorney may sometimes be able to negotiate a deal with the assigned prosecutor in which the client avoids charges in exchange for making restitution. In other cases where charges have been issued, the attorney might review the evidence that has been disclosed through the discovery process in order to identify problems with the case and then mount an aggressive defense to the allegations.
